The evening was complete by having the charter that Robert Burns took his obligation, this was only one of four occasions where the charter had left the lodge room in Mauchline' to which the Brethren of Coltswood will forever be in the debt of Lodge St. David for this high honour. The night also raised over £2000 for the Lodge Coltswood Centenary Fund in 2010. Click on the following link for more pictures and information on the evening (BURNS SUPPER 2009)

On the evening of Thursday 16th
June, Lodge Coltswood honoured
someone who has served both his
Mother Lodge and also the
Provincial Grand Lodge of
Lanarkshire Middle Ward
collectively for over 45 years,
Brother James Shanks.
In probably one of the best kept
secrets in Freemasonry Bro.
Shanks was presented with a set
of Past Depute Master's regalia
and suitably engraved Depute
Masters jewel to mark his tenure
of office as Depute Provincial
Grand Master.
As expected due to his popularity the attendance was fantastic with
Brethren from within and outwith
the Province including members of
Provincial Grand Lodge that
supported Mr. Shanks during his
term in office, the evening was
further enhanced with a
Deputation from the Provincial
Grand of Lodge of Lanarkshire
Middle Ward headed by the
Provincial Grand Master Bro.
Thomas Davidson and his newly
commissioned Substitute
Master's, this was hopefully to
be the first of many visits to
the Lodge in his new commission.
RWM Bro Gordon Rowe delivered a
very thorough and informative
speech on the Masonic career of
Mr. Shanks to which a suitable
reply was provided by Mr. Shanks
in his usual humorous style
having a go at the Lodge for
leading him into the false sense
of security thinking he would be
attending the Installation of the
new Provincial Grand Master the
following Saturday with a
borrowed or old set of
Provincial regalia.
Bro. James Shanks was initiated into
Lodge Coltswood Glenboig at the
age of 28 on 3rd February 1966,
passed on the 17th February 1966
and raised 3rd March 1966
receiving his Mark on 16th
November 1967. He was installed
as Right Worshipful Master of
the Lodge on 6th December 1969
by installing Master Bro.
William Menzies P.M, & Bro John
H. Marshall P.M..
At the Lodge installation in
1971 Bro. Shanks took his first
step into Provincial Grand Lodge
by being appointed to Grand
Committee succeeding Bro. George McGibbon who had to step down
from Provincial Grand Committee
due to work commitments, some 7
years later Bro. Shanks was
elected to his first
office as Provincial Grand
Junior Steward and some 12 years
later had the high honour of
being elected to Provincial
Grand Senior Warden. In 1996 the
Provincial Grand Master Bro.
George Kelly commissioned Bro.
Shanks as Substitute Provincial
Grand Master which he served
between 1996-2001, in 2002 Bro.
Shanks was awarded Honorary Grand Rank of Junior
Deacon of The Grand Lodge of
Scotland under the support the
Provincial Grand Master Bro
Kenneth D. Kennedy .
In 2006 the Provincial Grand
Master Bro. James L. Jack
commissioned Bro. Shanks as
Depute Provincial Grand Master
which he served during the term
of office between 2006 - 2011.
On behalf of Lodge Coltswood the
RWM and Brethren would like to
say thanks to Mr. Shanks for his
unerring commitment the Lodge &
indeed representing Provincial
Grand Lodge during his Masonic
career.
Well Done Bro. Shanks, we hope
you have a well earned rest, you
deserve it
